Auditions and Performing

Do I need experience to audition?

No! MET Musicals is a teaching company. We welcome performers of all experience levels, from first-timers to seasoned veterans. Enthusiasm and commitment matter as much as experience.

What's involved in an audition?

Most auditions include:

  • Vocal audition (singing prepared song)
  • Dance audition (learning choreography on the spot)
  • Cold reading from the script

Don’t worry – we provide guidance and support throughout!

When are auditions held?

We typically hold auditions 3-4 months before each production. Join our mailing list to receive audition notifications. Auditions are usually held at our rehearsal venue in Maylands.

What should I prepare for a vocal audition

The audition information page will provide details of the audition songs/passages for particular roles.  It’s also a good idea to prepare something else to showcase your voice.  Remember to bring sheet music (or music on a tablet).

I can't sing/dance very well. Can I still audition?

Absolutely! We have roles for all skill levels. Plus, you can get involved behind the scenes in many other ways (see below).

What if I can't attend all rehearsals?

Commitment to the rehearsal schedule is important. If you have unavoidable conflicts, note them on your audition form. The creative team will consider this during casting.

How often are rehearsals?

A rehearsal schedule will be provided to you. Typically 2-3 times per week for 8-12 weeks before opening.  More frequently in Production Week! Rehearsals are usually held at our Maylands rehearsal hall in the evenings and weekends.

Do performers get paid?

No, the MET is a community theatre company. All performers are volunteers. However, you’ll gain incredible experience, make lifelong friends, and be part of Adelaide’s musical theatre community!

Can teenagers audition?

Yes! Age requirements vary by show. Some productions need younger performers, others require adult casts. Check the specific audition notice for age requirements.

Volunteering and getting involved

I can't sing or dance. How can I help?

There are so many ways! We need volunteers for:

  • Set building and painting
  • Costume making and alterations
  • Props creation and sourcing
  • Backstage crew during shows
  • Front of house (ushering, box office)
  • Makeup and hair
  • Marketing and publicity
  • Photography
How much time commitment is required?

It varies greatly depending on your role:

  • Set building: Usually weekends for 4-6 weeks before the show
  • Backstage crew: Performance weeks (8-10 shows)
  • Front of house: Individual performances (a few hours per show)
  • Costumes: Can work on your own schedule in many cases
Do I need special skills to volunteer?

Not necessarily! If you’re handy with tools, good at sewing, organized, friendly with people, or willing to learn – we can use your help. We provide training and guidance.

I'd love to help but have limited availability. Is that okay?

Yes! Every bit helps. Even if you can only volunteer for a few performances or help with one specific task, we appreciate it.

How do I get started volunteering?

Fill out our volunteer interest form on our Get Involved page.  We’ll match you with opportunities that suit your interests and skills.
